List
Our list of Big Trees
includes diameters as well as circumferences. Further, there are the current National
Champions as they appear in the 2004-2005 National Register which is published
every two years in American Forests magazine and can be found at: www.amfor.org.
TOTAL SCORE = CIRCUMFERENCE in inches +
HEIGHT in feet + Ό AVERAGE CROWN SPREAD (feet); all three numbers,
please.

So many on the National Register
have not
changed. Our two National Champs, European Larch

are
as current as in VLT.
** We must check carefully in Victory on our Yellow Birch since the
National Champion now listed in
carefully
document our tree once more, and then submit to American Forests, all three
numbers!
Katsura and Ginkgo are
both wonderful and unusual urban trees.
If AF does not list non-native
trees
then their listing of Ailanthus
(Tree of Heaven), Oriental Arborvitae, Norway Spruce, English Oak, and our own
European Larch certainly raises questions about the non-native criterion. Katsura provides shade at the

Each of our Largest Trees of 115 species
must be revisited soon in 2003
to
make them comparable. Comparing a
2003 measurement with a 1980s
or
1990s measurement does not work since those trees
have
grown.
Some very large trees of advanced age are in decline,
especially
top
branches so the height may now be less.
Remeasuring is
important.
Having different persons
measuring both corrects errors and points out
differing
approaches and practices. Testing location information
and
working with owners is part of this project as
well.
